When Failure Means Millions in Ruined Capital#
If the paint peels on your dining room wall, it is an annoyance. But if the coating fails on a 50,000-litre chemical storage tank, a petroleum road tanker, or a structural steel bridge across the Nairobi Expressway, the consequence is structural collapse, hazardous chemical spills, and millions of shillings in catastrophic downtime.
In heavy industry, paint is known as protective coatings. It is an engineering discipline governed by rigorous international standards (such as ISO 12944). Applicators do not work with regular hairy paint rollers; they work with high-pressure airless spray rigs operating at 3,000 PSI, applying high-solids thermosetting polymers.
The Metric That Matters: What Is a Micron?#
In domestic painting, contracts often specify "two coats of paint." But what does a coat mean? A painter can apply a thick coat or water it down to nothing. In industrial engineering, coats are irrelevant. Everything is governed by Dry Film Thickness (DFT), measured in microns (µm).
One micron is one-thousandth of a millimetre (0.001mm). For perspective:
- A human hair is roughly 70 to 80 microns thick.
- A standard sheet of printer paper is roughly 100 microns thick.
- Standard domestic wall paint dries to roughly 30 to 40 microns per coat.
- An industrial heavy-duty offshore coating system is specified at 250 to 500+ microns DFT.
WFT vs DFT: The Math on the Spray Floor#
Target WFT = Target DFT ÷ (% Volume Solids ÷ 100) = 120 µm ÷ 0.60 = 200 µm WFT
By measuring the wet paint continuously during application, the spray technician guarantees that the cured dry film will meet structural specifications.
The Classic Duplex System: Epoxy + Polyurethane#
Explore our complete portfolio of Protective Industrial Coatings to protect your industrial assets.
- The Prime & Build Layer (High-Build Epoxy Mastic): Applied at 150 to 200 microns DFT directly to blast-cleaned steel. Epoxies offer peerless mechanical adhesion and chemical resistance. However, epoxies have one weakness: sunlight causes them to yellow, chalk, and lose gloss.
- The Armour Shield (Aliphatic Polyurethane Topcoat): Applied at 50 to 75 microns DFT over the epoxy. Aliphatic polyurethanes are impervious to UV radiation, maintaining their brilliant gloss and colour permanence under direct equatorial sun for 10+ years.
