Wood Is a Living, Breathing Substrate#
From heavy mahogany front entrance doors in Muthaiga to exposed cypress roof rafters and outdoor cedar pergolas, timber brings warmth and organic elegance to Kenyan architecture. But timber is biologically unique.
Unlike rigid concrete or inert steel, wood is hygroscopic. It behaves like a bundle of microscopic drinking straws that continuously absorb and release atmospheric humidity. During the wet months of April and November, timber swells across its grain; during dry, hot February, it shrinks and checks.
If you coat outdoor wood with an inflexible, brittle film, the timber will move while the coating cannot. Within six months, the finish fissures, moisture enters the cracks, and the wood turns an unsightly mouldy grey underneath a peeling plastic crust.
1. Wood Stains: Penetrating Colour and UV Defense#
A wood stain contains low-viscosity oils and finely ground iron-oxide pigments designed to soak deep into the cellular structure of the timber rather than forming a surface film.
Stains enhance and highlight natural grain patterns—such as teak, mahogany, walnut, or oak—without obscuring them. Crucially, quality exterior wood stains from our Wood Finishes Collection contain specialized UV absorbers that prevent the sun from decomposing lignin, the natural organic glue holding wood fibers together.
2. Clear Varnishes: The Classic Surface Shield#
A varnish is a traditional film-forming blend of natural drying oils (such as linseed or tung oil) and alkyd resins. It creates a smooth, honey-toned transparent coating that highlights the depth of the wood.
Varnishes are outstanding for interior architectural woodwork, church pews, and paneling. However, standard interior varnishes have zero UV blockers and low elasticity; applying them to an outdoor pergola in Nairobi will cause blistering and peeling within one season.
3. Polyurethane (PU): High-Traffic Armoring#
When you need maximum resistance against spilled red wine, hot tea cups, children’s toys, and heavy shoe traffic, polyurethane is the definitive specification.
Polyurethane resins form an exceptionally tough, scratch-resistant plastic shield. Available in gloss, satin, and matt sheens, single-pack moisture-cure or 2K polyurethanes are the mandatory standard for timber dining tables, kitchen countertops, and hardwood parquet flooring.
4. Yacht & Marine Varnish: Conquering the Elements#
For exterior timber that must endure direct rain and sunshine—such as exposed fascia boards, carved entrance doors, or coastal veranda rails—specify Yacht (Spar) Varnish.
Yacht varnishes are formulated with a high ratio of flexible oils (such as tung oil) and powerful ultraviolet absorbers. The cured film remains rubbery and flexible, expanding and contracting alongside the timber without snapping, while repelling moisture and fungal spores.
