Fresh cement render has a high pH (typically 12 to 13) containing free lime. Applying emulsion paints directly causes saponification—where alkaline salts attack the binder, leading to yellowing, blistering, and total film detachment.
Interior wall putty is a fine calcium-carbonate acrylic paste designed for feather-edging and creating glass-smooth walls. Exterior crack fillers contain elastomeric acrylic polymers and silanes to flex with seasonal thermal expansion without cracking.
First wire-brush and wash down loose chalk. Once dry, apply one generous coat of deep-penetrating solvent-based binding primer to consolidate friable particles and re-establish a sound anchoring substrate before applying new topcoats.
Standard interior fillers must never be used outside as rain will soften and wash them away. Use an exterior-grade waterproof cementitious fairing coat or polymer-modified crack filler for all exterior masonry elevations.
At normal Nairobi ambient temperature, light coats dry in 2 to 4 hours. Thick crack repairs should cure for 12 to 24 hours before sanding with 180 to 240-grit sandpaper and applying a primer coat.
