Why Metal Gates in Kenya Rust So Quickly#
A newly fabricated metal gate looks solid and imposing when installed by the welder. Yet within six to twelve months, rust streaks start leaking from hinges, weld seams blister, and paint flakes off in brittle chips.
This rapid failure happens because of poor surface preparation rather than the quality of the topcoat. Mild steel tubing (such as square hollow sections widely used in Kenya) comes from steel rolling mills covered in two invisible enemies:
1. Mill Scale. A brittle, blue-grey iron oxide layer formed during high-temperature rolling. It is electrochemically cathodic to steel. When water penetrates hairline scratches, galvanic corrosion accelerates rust underneath the scale.
2. Machine Oils and Greases. Steel fabricators use cutting fluids and protective oils to prevent raw stock from rusting in the yard. If a fundi applies paint directly over this oil, the paint cannot bond to the metal.
The 5-Step Professional Gate Painting Protocol#
To ensure your gate or perimeter fence looks pristine for five to seven years without rusting, follow this field-proven sequence:
Step 1: Solvent Degreasing. Wipe down all steel surfaces with clean rags soaked in industrial mineral turpentine or standard thinner. Replace dirty rags frequently. This dissolves and removes cutting oils and hand grease.
Step 2: Mechanical Rust and Slag Removal. Chipping hammers, wire brushes, and angle grinders must be used on every weld joint to chip off brittle welding slag. Sand all rusted areas with coarse 80-grit emery paper until shiny bare metal appears.
Step 3: Prime Immediately with Red Oxide or Zinc Phosphate. Bare steel begins flash-rusting within two hours of exposure to humid air. Apply the first coat of quality anti-rust primer (such as Apex Red Oxide, Solai Red Oxide Primer, or Seweco Red Oxide) immediately after sanding.
Step 4: Second Primer Coat on Joints. Apply a second coat of primer, paying special attention to corners, weld seams, hinge barrels, and bottom horizontal rails where rain sits.
Step 5: Apply Two Topcoats of Premium Synthetic Gloss. Once the primer has dried for 16 to 24 hours, apply two full coats of exterior gloss enamel (such as Solai Super Gloss, Seweco Hi-Gloss Enamel, or Apex Super Gloss), allowing 12 hours between coats.
Protecting Bottom Rails and Drainage Holes#
The most vulnerable part of any perimeter gate is the bottom rail. Road dust, mud splashes, and standing water attack this section constantly.
Ensure your welder has drilled small 6mm drainage weep holes at the lowest point of each vertical hollow section tube. Without drainage holes, condensation accumulates inside the hollow tube, rusting the gate from the inside out.
When painting, raise the gate off the ground or place cardboard underneath so the underside of the bottom rail receives full primer and topcoat coverage.
